South Melbourne Night Market Turns Ten

MEDIA RELEASE OCTOBER 2017

South Melbourne Night Market celebrates its 10th birthday in 2018 and everyone is invited to join the twilight fun from January 4 to February 22.

Just like the regular Market, there’s a lot to love about the South Melbourne Night Market. People come from near and far to experience the Market at twilight, with the delicious food and festival vibe attracting locals alongside tourists from interstate and abroad. After all, where else in Melbourne can you saunter along the street and take your pick of world-class fare from restaurants, bars, food trucks and carts while enjoying a laid-back summer atmosphere with live music?

South Melbourne Night Market

“From humble beginnings, the South Melbourne Night Market has grown into a must-do Melbourne event. Dinner and drinks, shopping and music under the stars – it’s a much-loved combination that the Market is looking forward to showcasing again on this milestone anniversary,” Port Phillip Mayor Bernadene Voss says.

Enjoy the balmy summer city nights with a chilli margarita and prawn dumplings from new restaurant on the Market block Bambu, or settle in for some holiday vibes with a beer and some seriously good food at Claypots Evening Star, Paco y Lola, Köy or Simply Spanish. Seafood lovers will be able to indulge in freshly shucked oysters and a variety of wines from the new Aptus Oyster Bar.

Joining in will be a tasty collection of food trucks and carts dishing up the food that Melburnians have come to know and love. Think slow cooked BBQ, lobster rolls, sliders, homemade gnocchi, jerk chicken, poke bowls, crêpes, wood-fired pizza, raclette, chicken souvas with oregano and feta chips and lots more.

Sweet treats like ice-cream, handmade peanut brittle, Nutella crepes, doughnuts, single-origin chocolate soft serve and crème brûlée will fuel the twilight journey home.

In between sampling street food or enjoying a meal with friends, there’s shopping aplenty. The Market’s Centre Aisle will be open, with several of the regular stallholders opening their doors or setting up a special stall for the evening to sell fashion, homewares, artisan goods and fresh, local produce. These include traders in the Market’s SO:ME Space – TheSuperCool, Lost in Seasons, Spin, #Collaborate Store, Terrarium Laboratory and Hew. And don’t forget to pick up a bunch of flowers on your way home from Market florist Azalea.

Joining these regular Market traders will be stallholders offering unique wares such as handmade accessories, clothing and homewares; artisan goods; art and collectibles – some of which may even be by emerging talents who are making their public debut. If you’re looking for the next hot local label, you may just find it here. The music line-up will offer something new every week, showcasing local singer-songwriters, indie folk, jazz and world music artists.
