Applications for the 2020 season are now closed.


2020 Event Changes

We’re excited to announce some changes to the 2020 South Melbourne Night Market season. Changes include:

  • Moving the event to a Wednesday, when the whole Market is OPEN and will remain open into the evening
  • The event is running for 5 weeks
  • The event runs from 12 midday until 9.30pm – extending the duration and including lunch trade
  • Market Stalls will be located on Coventry Street only, with marquee hire and setup included in booking
  • Food trucks and stalls will be placed on Cecil and Coventry Streets
  • Free live entertainment on both Cecil and Coventry Streets
  • Bar and licenced area on Cecil Street only
  • All stall and food truck bookings are for the full five-week season

  • 12pm – 9.30pm Wednesday 15 January
  • 12pm – 9.30pm Wednesday 22 January
  • 12pm – 9.30pm Wednesday 29 January
  • 12pm – 9.30pm Wednesday 5 February

Audience

South Melbourne Market commenced operation in 1867 and has been serving Melburnians for 150 years. The Market is a treasured inner city landmark and a favourite amongst locals and visitors. Over 5 million people shop at the Market annually. The Market’s audience is very diverse, but skewed to the local area, many with high household incomes.

The Night Market draws on this audience but also seeks to attract a broader audience. By providing a unique fusion of food, music, entertainment, creativity and culture, the South Melbourne Night Market caters to a new generation of Market-goers from the local and inner city urban areas.

Market research shows that South Melbourne Night Market visitors:

  • Overall satisfaction is very high: 95% rated our 2019 season as very good or excellent
  • Have an average age of 35 years
  • Both male and female (even split)
  • Food, particularly street food and food trucks drives visitation
  • See it as a great way to socialise with friends
  • Traveled from a variety of suburbs with local Port Phillip residents making up approximately a third of visitors each week

Layout

The South Melbourne Night Market is a popular place to come, meet friends, share some great food & wine, do a spot of late-night shopping and browse the stalls.

The location is iconic and well-supported by existing restaurants on Cecil Street, with food and market stalls on Coventry Street and a bar and live music on Cecil Street.

Stall Bump In / Out

  • Bump in from 9am
  • Bump out by 10.30pm

Stall Criteria

Market Stalls: We favour stalls with locally designed or made, artisan, unique and/ or hard-to-find products. We seek to have an eclectic mix of stalls that are relevant to our target market. Items can include: clothing; accessories and jewellery; vintage or collectible items; artisan wares; art work including paintings, prints and photographs; culturally-relevant items; packaged food. Stalls that will NOT be accepted include: massage, personal services, potted plants, incense and furniture.

Food and Beverage: We favour well marketed outlets with a strong social network. All food trucks will be required to provide their own power. Food marquees may apply however there are limited spaces, and must supply their own marquee and tagged and tested power cords, and clearly indicate what power is required.

Stall Costs

Please note that bookings are for the full five-week season:

  • Market Stalls (2.4m x 2.4m marquee) $850 inc GST

Note:

  • Food trucks and food marquees are required to register on Streatrader.

Payments

After your application has been submitted, it will be reviewed and payment will only be processed once your application is approved. If your application is unsuccessful, payment will not be processed.

By submitting your application you are committing to the full five-week season and consenting to your credit card being charged if your application is approved.
